Who are you? My name is Ryan Malloy and I am a Regional Director of Recruiting with VOYlegal. I am originally from Boston, MA and now spend the majority of my time in Austin, TX. I was previously a Consultant with VOYlegal. What do you do at VOYlegal? As Regional Director I oversee industry trends and attorney recruiting efforts in the Texas and New England legal markets. In addition to sourcing and recruiting highly qualified attorney candidates, I manage client relationships and support a team of legal recruiters. Where do you work? Although much of my work is focused in Texas and in Boston, I have placed attorneys in practice groups across the country. I frequently meet with candidates and clients in major cities nationwide. I also represent VOYlegal at career fairs and legal conferences. What is your professional background? I graduated from GW Law in 2009 and practiced for several years as a Litigation Associate with Seyfarth Shaw in Boston. Prior to law school I was a Corporate Legal Assistant with Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York. What drew you to legal recruiting? While practicing law I most enjoyed connecting with and learning from the diverse, intelligent colleagues and clients I came to know. Throughout my career I was also always interested in law firm economic trends and practice area developments. Legal recruiting is a natural fit in that it allows me to merge my relationship-building skills with a broad knowledge of the legal industry. What do you like about legal recruiting? I enjoy working directly with clients to fill lateral hiring needs, as well as helping attorneys discover their next professional move. Legal recruiting has tangible and beneficial results. It is always rewarding to close a deal knowing that all parties are satisfied and that your work adds value to a client's business. What is your day-to-day like? Legal recruiters at VOYlegal are fortunate in that we wear many hats. I spend much of my time sourcing and recruiting prospective candidates, as well as working directly with client management. I also serve as a career counselor to candidates, providing practice group insight, resume guidance, and interview preparation. In addition, I regularly negotiate offer terms and conditions, which I greatly enjoy. Was it challenging to transition from your prior career? Having worked and practiced at major law firms in New York City and Boston, I quickly realized that I possessed much of the knowledge necessary to be a skilled legal recruiter prior to joining VOYlegal. Furthermore, VOYlegal recruiters are collaborative, accessible, and communicative. I attribute much of my success to the collective wisdom of our team. What’s your plan for the future? I look forward to assisting my team at VOYlegal as we continue to build a renowned national platform. I also strive to develop new relationships with clients across regions and practice areas. Anything else? When I am not consulting legal professionals, I can be found working as a volunteer immigration attorney or exploring nature with my dog and friends. I enjoy live music, restaurants, and physical challenges.

What do you do at VOYlegal?
I am a senior director, which means, that in addition to recruiting and placing VOYlegal members into positions across the U.S., I also am responsible for trying to grow VOYlegal's reputation/brand among clients in the South.
Where do you work? I work mostly from my home, but occasionally will take things "on the move" for a change of scenery (or if required by things going on in my life). There are times when I may be on the phone with candidates or clients between running errands, or sending emails from my "mobile office" (aka, my parked car) if I need to be running errands. So, I have a lot of flexibility -- but mostly I work from the comfort of my home office.
What is your professional background? I was in banking for 5 years before I went to law school (investment banking and corporate banking with Bank of America and Wachovia). Following law school, I stayed on the transactional side of things and became a Corporate Associate in Atlanta (working for Troutman Sanders and then King & Spalding). I ultimately went in-house to work for a client (a public company that is a builder of single family homes), but really felt that I was not truly fulfilled by my practice. I chose to leave practice in order to find something that resonated more with me, and really was more conducive to spending time with my husband (and family).
What drew you to legal recruiting? I left my position with my in-house employer before I knew exactly where I was heading, but legal recruiting was at the top of my list -- whether for a recruiting company or "in-house" for a law firm. I felt like I really wanted the opportunity to connect with people on a deeper level, and felt that my own experiences at law firms and in-house would help me relate well to people looking to make a move.
What do you like about legal recruiting? Helping people to think through and formulate plans to reach their longer term career goals. This usually translates in making them happier, not only in the short term, but also the longer term. Building these relationships and becoming a trusted advisor is what makes being a recruiter so rewarding for me.
What makes VOYlegal different from other search firms? A few things, but those that really stick out for me are: (1) market placement flexibility - our ability to place candidates in ANY market in the U.S. -- you are not limited simply by where you sit or where your candidates sit (I move people across markets ALL the time); (2) physical location flexibility - I don't have to sit in a cubicle in a big office to get my job done, and this honestly helps my productivity (all of my teammates are easily accessible via phone, hangouts, etc.).; and (3) our cutting edge approach to aggregating information about VOYlegal members and the market.
What is your day-to-day like? My day-to-day varies a decent amount but the general construct stays the same. The goal of everyday is to reach out to prospects and existing candidates on new positions. EVERYDAY. This means that cold-calling is in the plan -- every day. Now, when there is a very active pipeline of candidates submitting to positions and interviewing, the cold calling and basic outreach may take up far less time in my day as I am working to submit candidates to positions, talk to them about positions and coordinate interviews/interview preparation with candidates. But everyday starts with an eye towards new outreach and follow-up.
Was it challenging to transition from your prior career?I did not come into recruiting with as much of an appreciation for how much active legwork really would go into calling possible candidates -- trying to get them to talk, get to know them better (even if they didn't want to make a move immediately) and really working the phones (and following-up...consistently...all of the time). But once I climbed up that curve, the rhythm became fairly easy to keep up!
What’s your plan for the future? I am focused on trying to help VOYlegal really build out our team in the South as well as working to grow name/brand recognition for VOYlegal across the region. Beyond continuing to grow with VOYlegal, I am very happy recruiting and believe I will stay in this career (and with this company) for a long time.

What do you do at VOYlegal?
I'm a senior director in the Washington, DC market. You could also say I help employers find and recruit brilliant attorneys.
Where do you work?The company is largely virtual, so I work, most of the time, from my home office about 20 minutes outside Washington, DC. I have my laptop set up with a double monitor, a rainbow keyboard protector, and a giant cup of coffee, next to my phone and headset, with a yoga ball rolling chair to twirl on. I go into DC once a week, give or take, but have a very flexible schedule.
What is your professional background?My past includes a business degree, a stint in fundraising and development at Mary Washington, teaching LSAT prep, a couple of years doing marketing for The Princeton Review, a law degree from UVa, and practice with an AmLaw 100 firm. After I Ieft the lawyer life, I did a handful of non-legal projects in the restaurant and organic farming industries, as well as with law enforcement. However, I stayed tuned in to the legal industry, so after starting a family (and needing an ever-so-slightly more predictable schedule) I joined the marketing and business development team with another AmLaw 100. I enjoyed working with firms in a non-practicing capacity, and Legal Recruiting was a great next step -- Greater income potential, more flexibility, and a new and different way to use all the knowledge I have about different practices!
What drew you to legal recruiting?I'd been paying attention to law firms at some level since I started looking for a job after my first year of law school -- Even after I left practice, many of friends and classmates were with firms, and I was still keeping up with the odd Above the Law post. I wanted to find a position that would turn this "time suck" and "random trivia retention" into "valuable industry knowledge" if at all possible! I also wanted to find a career that involved interacting with people that I would feel like I made a positive impact every day -- I discovered that being good at something (spreadsheets for instance) is handy, but finding that something that you also really enjoy is the trick! This career rewards being fearless on the phone, being able to listen well, and being able to advocate and educate, all things I'm enthusiastically for!
What do you like about legal recruiting?I like knowing a little bit about a great many things -- In this career, instead of developing expertise in one area of law, I need a broader understanding of what each practice area does, what kind of problems they solve and for whom, as well as the aspects of day to day life that differ between groups at a firm, and between firms as well. My job is to get to know people, candidates, and find out what they want from their careers -- I also get to know employers, and find out what they want, as well as what they can offer lateral hires, the pros and the cons. My job is to make introductions, and help both sides put their best foot forward -- At the end of the day though, both sides find a great fit and it's a win for everyone!
What makes VOYlegal different from other search firms?The technology infrastructure is a cut above, as are the people on our team. There are a lot of resources available to guide you when you're learning how to do this, and a lot of support and opportunity after you've found your rhythm as well!
What is your day-to-day like?I make a lot of phone calls! I call candidates to see if they have questions about information I sent earlier, I call Recruiting Staff to schedule interviews and follow up on submissions. I compose emails a bit as well, but being on the phone, is how the job gets done.
Was it challenging to transition from your prior career?The challenges for me included planning for and adjusting to a less predictable income stream. The very high income potential ends up providing the correct balance on that front, for me though. Working from home also required some adjustments -- I can wear yoga pants all day, and plan to attend events in the middle of the day, BUT without a clear plan for what needs to be accomplished, I had a couple days that ended being all doing laundry and making snacks at the beginning.
What’s your plan for the future?I see a great future with VOY -- I love the team here, and the flexibility and control I have over my own schedule. More importantly, I feel like I am making individual lives a bit better, one at a time. Not just on days that I make a placement (those are great!) but when I talk to associates, usually pretty early in their careers, who don't know how law firms or the lateral market work in much detail, and can pass along some rules of the road, I feel good about my career.
